Online LGBTQ+ Therapy NYC:

Come Home to Yourself—On Your Own Terms

Being LGTBQ+ Doesn’t Have to Mean Feeling Alone, Misunderstood or Second Rate.

You’ve done the work to survive—hiding parts of yourself, navigating spaces that didn’t see you, maybe even trying to “fix” who you are. But you’re ready for more than survival now.

LGBTQ+ Therapy in NYC is a space to lay all of that down. Whether you’re carrying the impact of religious trauma, family rejection, identity confusion, or years of quiet self-doubt, therapy with me can help you reconnect with who you are—beneath the fear, the pressure, and the shame. Online therapy offers you the safety and flexibility to do this work wherever you are in NYC or New York State.

This is Your Space to Heal—Not Just Cope

You deserve more than “making it work.” LGBTQ+ Therapy in NYC can be a space to release old pain, reconnect with your strength, and start showing up as your full, relaxed, unapologetic self.

Hi, I’m Eric Hovis, LMHC—A Queer Therapist in NYC Who Gets It

My name is Eric Hovis (he/him), and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Online LGBTQ+ Therapist in New York City.

I love working with LGBTQ+ adults who want to feel more grounded in their identity, clearer in their relationships, and freer from the weight of the past. I bring my full self to this work—including my own lived experience—and create a space where healing, growth, and clarity can unfold.

Why Online LGBTQ+ Therapy in NYC with Me is Different

Reclaim Identity Without Shame

We’ll gently explore the parts of you that have felt silenced or shamed—especially if you’re recovering from religious trauma, internalized homophobia, or family conflict. Using EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Experiential techniques and trauma-informed care, we’ll loosen the grip of those old messages.

Repair the Relationship with Yourself

This isn’t about fixing you. It’s about helping you reestablish trust in your own inner wisdom, process the pain you’ve carried, and feel more at ease in your body and mind.

Show Up Authentically—In Life, Work, and Love

Therapy helps you stop shrinking or second-guessing who you are. Together, we’ll help you live, love, and lead in alignment with the real you.

You need a therapist who both gets what you’re feeling as well as the ABCs of LGBTQ+ life…who knows that 'sub' isn't just a sandwich, understands that 'DTF' isn't a typo, and won't confuse Grindr with a kitchen appliance.

As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, and a specialist in LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy, I offer a non-judgmental space where you can freely explore what works for you. I know reaching out can feel like a big step, but I’ll make it easy. We’ll spend 15-minutes on the phone and I’ll let you know how or if I can help. FAQs

  • LGBTQ+ affirming therapy provides a safe, inclusive and collaborative space to explore identity, heal from rejection or trauma, and build self-acceptance. My approach helps clients navigate discrimination, family or religious rejection, and internalized shame with compassionate, trauma-informed care. We’ll work together to uncover insights and foster self-acceptance.

  • Online therapy makes getting support more convenient and accessible, allowing you to fit sessions into your life without commuting. I use secure video platforms to provide the same depth of care as in-person therapy, specializing in LGBTQ+ and trauma-informed approaches.

  • EMDR helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories, so they lose their emotional intensity. Using bilateral stimulation (BLS)—like eye movements or tapping—EMDR helps you move past feeling stuck, frozen, or overwhelmed by past experiences.

I specialize in using EMDR to address interpersonal trauma, religious trauma, and the stress of navigating life as an LGBTQ+ individual. It’s also a powerful tool for building resilience and strengthening internal resources.

  • Trauma-informed therapy prioritizes safety, trust, and empowerment, recognizing how past experiences shape your emotional world. We don’t just talk about trauma—we build internal resources first, so you can process painful memories without re-traumatization. My approach, especially with LGBTQ+ clients, ensures you feel seen and supported while working through identity-based trauma, anxiety, or past wounds.

  • If you experience anxiety, depression, flashbacks, or relationship struggles tied to past events, trauma therapy may help. If you feel stuck in old patterns, have difficulty trusting, or notice emotional overwhelm in response to triggers, therapy can support your healing.

    • Not sure if it’s right for you? Let’s talk. Schedule a free consultation here.

  • Religious trauma occurs when harmful religious experiences cause psychological distress, shame, or identity struggles. Many LGBTQ+ individuals seek refuge in NYC after facing rejection, control, or fear-based teachings from religious communities.

In therapy, we validate your experiences, process past wounds, and support you in reclaiming your identity—spiritually or otherwise, on your own terms.

  • For clients interested in spirituality, I provide a space to explore, reclaim, or redefine spiritual beliefs in a way that aligns with their healing. This might involve processing past religious harm, resolving internal conflicts, or finding affirming practices that support your growth. Spirituality in therapy is never imposed—it's guided by your values and what feels meaningful to you.

  • Living in a world that can feel unwelcoming to LGBTQ+ individuals takes a toll. Chronic stress, internalized shame, and past trauma can show up as anxiety, restlessness, or depression. Therapy helps you understand these patterns, heal past wounds, and build resilience so that you can feel more grounded in who you are.

  • Substance use is often a response to trauma, stress, or emotional pain. In therapy, we explore the underlying causes, build healthier coping strategies, and support long-term healing. If additional support is needed, I may recommend 12-step or alternative recovery programs alongside our work.

You’re not wrong, bad, sinful, too much, and you’re not broken. It’s time to live as who you really are—with clarity, calm, and confidence.

Let’s talk about how we can work together.
